Some architectural purists contend that the building is top-heavy, with dense upper floors resting awkwardly upon the graceful ground-floor colonnade, but it's hard to imagine the Piazza with any other design. Always much more than a residence, this Palazzo was White House, Senate, torture chamber, and prison rolled into one.
